Where gliding was invented — the Rhön's bare summit has been launching sailplanes since the 1920s.
The Wasserkuppe is the birthplace of the sport: pilots came here in the years after the First World War to fly unpowered off the treeless dome, and the hill has been in continuous use ever since. Today it carries a gliding school, a museum and a summit airfield, with paragliders sharing the slopes. It is the highest point in Hesse and unusually accessible for a flying site.
